OS X The app no longer prompts the user to download Java 6, since Java 7 is bundled with the OS X version of the app. Characters can now create custom gear for their characters. The Sixth Gun is now supported. The power section of a statblock now lists a character’s power points and the number of unclaimed powers as well.
Bug Fixes. Homebrew Derived statistic formulas that include non-existent Knowledge skills prevent a character from being created.

HF Arcane Background (Miracles, Dargar) no longer tries to add Smite twice. HF Fixed an issue with Arcane Backgrounds that have signature powers with trappings. HF Rune skills no longer get reset to d4 after save and load. HF Rune skills are now linked to Smarts, rather than not having a linked Attribute. NE-SPC The setting now uses Four Color, per an official recommendation from Clint Black. SPC Rising Stars now properly calculates a change in Power Points.

The rules are comprehensive but streamlined, and the core book is only $9.99 and comes in a really conveniently sized paperback. Book keeping is minimal and I can run a typical session without needing to reference a book. On one occasion I ran an impromptu one shot without books, simply torn up pieces of binder paper for character sheets, and some borrowed dice (and deck of cards, tokens etc.) Character creation is fairly simple, and advancement doubly so.
Player Characters tend to be powerful, but not invulnerable. Character advancement is linear compared to the exponential power growth of DnD characters. As characters progress they really tend to grow out and not just up.
Players tend to pick the things they really need organically based on what happens during the session, and not based on some future build order. That said there are some character optimization tips I give my players for long term play. (Dump everything into attributes at character creation, never miss your opportunities to raise an attribute once per rank.).
Classic and Reloaded are currently the best ones. There are a couple of pros and cons to each. Classic Pros:.
Each character arcane class has its very own unique way of play. The Edges and Hindrances are super detailed and interesting. Gameplay is very fun and unique Classic cons:.
Combat takes a very long time because of the cards. If the arcane classes aren't prepared they can take a very long time. It requires an insane amount of dice, 5+ d12s for one character skill isn't uncommon.
Arcane classes are very risky, Magic usually won't work, and sometimes it will fail terribly. The DM suffers a lot in this game. They have to keep track of a lot of miscellaneous rules and roll tons of dice. The game isn't as supported as Reloaded is. Reloaded Pros.
Combat is streamlined. Arcane classes are streamlined. Rolls are usually around 2 dice, so you don't need a whole lot of dice. Still uses chips, cards, and dice. So the main mechanics are still there. Much easier for the DM to handle.
The online presence for this game at peginc, is amazing. Plus they constantly come out with new books and adventures.
Also since the game is part of savage lands, any other adventures can be ported into deadlands. Reloaded Cons. The Arcane classes seem a bit more bland since their powers are grouped together. Characters a less powerful in Reloaded, but are more general. So you could have someone specializing in guns instead of just pistols. (It's a con depending on who you are.) I've been playing both deadlands for a while now. My group also started playing Deadlands Noir before it came out due to the kickstarter. I don't know if this is true of Reloaded, but Classic is also organised with separating player knowledge and GM knowledge about the world in mind. The best way to run it is with new players who have no idea what to expect and just think its a wild west game with some added twists like magic for those interested in it, and then let them figure out what's really happening when they start finding undead and other monsters and figuring out that someone in the party is Harrowed. That's the way it was first run when it was being written and cobbled together as a homebrew anyway.
